Grotto
The Grota Project began in the 1980s when Otávia Paes Selles, a retired teacher, took the initiative to help the children of the Grota do Surucucu community in Niterói, providing tutoring for those who were having difficulties at school.
In 1995, Otávia asked her son, Márcio Selles, to also give music lessons. Thus began the introductory music classes, teaching recorder and violin. This was the beginning of the Grota Orchestra. In 1998, after Dona Otávia's passing, Márcio and his wife, Lenora Mendes, took over the direction of the project.
In 2004, with support from the Brazil Foundation and the Cooperforte Institute, improvements were made to the facilities, and in 2007, the small house that Otávia built took on the characteristics of a building, becoming the Grota Cultural Space (ECG). Since then, the project has grown, welcoming thousands of students, many of whom have become university students, teachers, and collaborators of the space.
The Grota Orchestra is composed of musicians, mostly graduates of the ECG (Escola Gaúcha de Guimarães), who have performed in various regions of Brazil and abroad. The project also includes other artistic groups at beginner and intermediate levels.
Missão
Mobilizar talentos, desenvolver habilidades e ampliar o universo de referências culturais em crianças, adolescentes e jovens das comunidades, para gerar oportunidades que permitam realizações pessoais e o exercício pleno da cidadania.
Contribuir para o desenvolvimento para o desenvolvimento pessoal de quem se encontra em situação de vulnerabilidade, através da identificação e potencialização de talentos e vocações, construção de capacidades artísticas, ampliação da diversidade cultural, formação para prática cidadã, garantia dos direitos essenciais, profissionalização e inserção no mercado de trabalho.
Visão
O Espaço Cultural da Grota (ECG) pretende ser uma referência cultural reconhecida pela sociedade de Niterói.
Valores
No desenvolvimento de suas atividades, o ECG observa os princípios da legalidade, ética, impessoalidade, moralidade e da eficiência e não faz qualquer discriminação de cor de pele, gênero ou religião (Artigo 3º do Estatuto).
